Split in a day?

I will be traveling to Croatia in late June and will be arriving to Split in the late afternoon/evening from Plitvice. Planning on spending the next full day in Split. Is it possible to see Diocletian's Palace, the Riva area, and hike around Marjan in one full day?

The Riva is right beside Diocletian's palace. You can definitely tour the palace within a day depending on how much you explore (which you should do). The palace really isn't that big, but it becomes a maze of twisty passages and a jumble of streets. If you are including the exploration of Old Town which is just outside the palace, you can easily fill a day with that and eating dinner somewhere along the Riva. I would only attempt Marjan if you are "done" with the palace area and still have quite a bit of daylight left in your day.

By the way, the palace is really beautiful and striking at night. Even if you toured during the day, dart back in after the sun has gone down. You don't need to re-explore -- a little stroll will do just fine.

Sure you can do it, just get up early and hit the ground early...you may want to get the hike out of the way first because you can use the early hours (when other things are closed) to your advantage....it's a gorgeous hike by the way. I wouldn't skip it, you can get a wonderful view of the city from the hill. The Riva should come alive at night, there is always something going on there. By the way, you'll have to pass by the Riva no matter what on your way to Marjan Hill because the "trail head" is at the very end.

Another yes. We did the same in one day - hiked Marjan Hill and wandered through the entire town and Palace.
