Split, Hvar, Korcula? Dubrovnik 6 nites Oct 24

Need some idea and tips for traveling from Split to Dubrovnik and back to Split Oct 19-25, 2024

This is challenging because we are flying in and out of Split. I couldn't change a flight so that we fly out of Dubrovnik. From some of the posts it was suggested 1 nite Split, 3 nights Hvar or Korcula and 3 nites Dubrovnik that's 7 nites and I only have 6

Fly into Split arrive 3:15 on a saturday
Fly out of Split on Friday
1. what do you recommend for day trips?
2. Do you recommend staying in Hvar?
3. What hotels are recommended in Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik?
4. How would you recommend getting back to Split from Dubrovnik? Car? 2 hr drive?
5. what day trips would you recommend either ferry or in town?

thanks for any advice and tips you have. Lynn

Split to/from Dubrovnik is a 4 hour drive, not 2, so it eats up a half day. Since you
have to do a RT sooner or later, it eats up a full day more or less. If you land on
Saturday at 3:15pm and fly out on Friday, you really only have 5 days, and divided
among 3 places with two half days of travel, well, you do the math.

Are you set on Dubrovnik? Have you been to Plitvice or Krka? How are you thinking
of getting to Dubrovnik (you ask about return, but not origination)?

Bottom line, I think you can spend nights in 2 places and maybe add in 1 day trip. I know
that saying you should sacrifice Dubrovnik sounds outlandish, but you are really
pressed for time here.

That’s a hard one - with 6 nights it is very, very rushed. You can check out the ferry schedules at Croatiaferries.com. But it doesn’t look like the times are on your side. You could spend your first night in Split, ferry to Hvar for 1 or 2 nights then depending on the ferry schedule, ferry to Dubrovnik for 2 nights back to Split for the last night for your flight out. The ferry from Dubrovnik to Split is 4.5-5 hours. A drive is a little over 3 hours. If your flight isn’t too early you could hire a driver early in the morning to get you to the airport from Dubrovnik eliminating the need to stay in Split adding the extra night to Split.
Logistically I would skip Dubrovnik this trip. The ferry to and from Hvar to Split is only 1.5 hours. It would be a less complicated trip this way.

Thanks for the advice on skipping Dubrovnik. Hoping we can get what we need out of Split and Hvar or Korcula.
My hubby is a huge Game of Thrones fan. Is it worth it to see the tour?

There are some spots in and near Split used for GofT, specifically Klis and under Diocletian’s palace. I know a tour guide in Split who can help you there - Pero Ugarkovic. His email is [email protected].

For more GofT sights skip Hvar and Korčula and divide your time between Dubrovnik and Split. Visit Lokrum Island, a quick 15 minute ferry ride from the Dubrovnik pier. You’ll recognize the sights right away.

I did the same itinerary in reverse from Dubrovnik to Split over 9 nights. 6 nights is really tight but here’s what I would recommend— Because Split’s airport is about 45 minutes from the ferry docks and the last high-speed Krilo Catamaran leaves Split for Hvar at 6:45pm, it will be dark by the time you would depart for Hvar. ( sunset at 6pm). You will also be jet lagged so, on Nite 1 stay in Diocletian’s Palace in SPLIT. It’s close to the ferry port and is the # 1 attraction in Split. Built into Diocletian’s Palace’s 2,000-year-old walls is the accommodation called “Golden Gate Rooms.” which I highly recommend. It actually is the site of the barracks of the Roman soldiers who defended Diocletian’s Palace— built for the only Roman Emperor to ever retire.
Don’t miss the Peristyle Square of Diocletian’s Palace or the completely intact Roman “Temple of Jupiter.”

Nites 2/3: HVAR. It takes 1:10 on the Krilo Catamaran to reach Hvar. Stay in Hvar Town and hike to the castle above the town. One of the best beaches is in front of the Amfora Hvar Grand Beach Resort, about a 15-minute walk just outside of Hvar Town.
Nites 4/5: DUBROVNIK. Dubrovnik is tiny and that means you have time to take the 15-minute ferry to Lokrum island— site of a forested National Park with a monastery from the 1500’s that is the site of the “Iron Throne” from the “Game of Thrones.” There also is a fort on Lokrum Island that Napolean built to protect Dubrovnik. “Rooms Vicelic Guest House” is a highly-rated, good-value accommodation within Old Dubrovnik’s ancient walls.
Nite 6: Return to Split on a 4-hour bus and stay in Split before flying home on Day 7. ( Picking up
and returning a rental car takes too much time to seriously consider since the drive time is 3+ hours).
Between Hvar and Dubrovnik, the Krilo Catamaran will stop in KORCULA to drop off passengers.
While the catamaran docks you’ll get a good look
at Korcula Town which looks like a compact, medieval fortified town with most of its ramparts, towers and parapets intact. Take pictures of this ancient town from the catamaran.
Have a great Trip!

Just spent 24 nights in Croatia. As Rick Steves states, Dubrovnik is the pearl of the Adriatic, and I agree. We spent 5 nights there and loved each day. Stayed at Van Bloemen apartments, apartment #3, which was in a fantastic location.
Spent 3 nights each in Korcula and Hvar (didn't really notice a rowdy young group). As with Split (spent 5 nights ) and Zagreb (also 5 nights). I didn't feel unsafe in any of those places. In Hvar, we stated at Apartment Lea:. It was located in the old town, with plenty of steps. The apartment was great with a little outdoor patio. His e-mail is [email protected].
In Split we stayed at Kaleta Apartments (Apt #1). Beautiful apartment with washer and drying rack. email [email protected]. Web site www.kaletaapartments.com. Why not take the ferry from. We started in Dubrovnik, took the ferry to Kocula, and a ferry to Hvar. Also we took a ferry from Hvar to Split. Not expensive and relaxing than having to deal with a car. Have fun.

I stayed at Heritage Hotel Dea Hvar on Hvar Island and would recommend it for the handy location, the friendly staff, the cleanliness of the facility, and the excellent breakfast made-to-order.

For dinner, I ate an excellent meal at the Adriana Hotel’s outdoor restaurant with a front row view as the huge expensive yachts kept coming into Hvar for the night.

Ferries: I purchased my ferry tickets on-line at home for the 1-hour ferry from Split to Hvar and the 75 minute ferry from Hvar to Korcula. I used the Krilo ferry company and rode the passenger catamaran ferries - very easy & convenient. This trip was in June 2023.
