Last-minute trip to Istrian Peninsula, public transportation only. I'm considering flying Seattle to Venice and then going by train or ferry. Any experience with either option? Thinking of staying in Rovinj but I'm open to suggestions. I'd have about a week on the peninsula, and would likely take the train back to spend a bit of time in Trieste or Udine before returning home. Any advice appreciated, it's all negotiable at this time.
You can't take the train to Rovinj. Either take the ferry (if it's running that day - very limited sailings the later you get in the season, maybe more to Porec), the bus, or a shuttle service like GoOpti (Slovenian company) or some combination. You might first try to find a bus from Venice airport directly to Rovinj. You can take the train between Venice Mestre and Trieste. There are buses from Treiste to Rovinj, but then you are looking at multiple modes of transportation.
Not sure if you could get all the way to your destination on the day you arrive in VCE, but getting as far as Trieste seems reasonable. Then you could catch the bus to Rovinj the next day - Google Maps suggests a FlixBus at 10:55am.
If you arrive VCE late at night, you could also stay near Mestre station and take an early train to catch said bus in Trieste.
