Planning on driving from Rovinj to the lakes in mid June and I'm wondering what the best route to take in terms of traffic but also good scenery. We'll be leaving Rovinj around noon and I'd love to go via some of the hill towns north east of Rovinj rather than the E751 highway. I doubt that we'll stop in any of the towns but would just like a nice scenic drive on our way to the lakes. If it makes any difference we've already been to Tuscany and loved it. Is that an insane detour or workable with summer traffic? We'd like to arrive in time for a later dinner at our hotel close to the National Park. Thoughts or suggestions?
If you have time and want to enjoy the scenery, I think it's fine to take any longer route that looks interesting.
You might want to use Google maps and street view. Just click on a road you're considering taking and you can actually see what the scenery will look like as you follow that road.
The quickest route from Rovinj to Plitvice is probably close to 4 hours, so taking detours could turn it into a very long drive. I don't know about traffic; I was there in mid-May, and there was no traffic to speak of.
By the way, at least a few of those hill towns are worth exploring, even if you've been to Tuscany. If you only have time for one, I'd stop in Grožnjan.
