Rome to Dubrovnik - transit

Hi all,

I am planning to visit Dubrovnik next summer (July 2017), and am finding that there is very little info on the best (most efficient and economical) way to reach Dubrovnik from Rome. As we are somewhat short on time, I am leaning towards flying over boating. Any suggestions on flights, different methods of transits, or things to avoid, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Efficient and economical may not necessarily go hand-in-hand, but with this amount of time you should be able to get a good fare, so I am 99% sure flying will be it. Skyscanner website is good for low-cost carriers.
The website https://www.rome2rio.com/ is a great resource for figuring out transport options.

Going by boat would not be most efficient because you'd have to then switch modes once you get to Bari or Ancona (Rome does not face the Adriatic, unlike Dubrovnik). There is no train service in Dubrovnik, so trains are out. Google "Dubrovnik to Rome" and you'll see flight listings - some budget carriers have limited flights which vary and don't run every day, although there should be more of them in July because it's peak summer season. There are also connecting flights which take longer. Flying seems to be the best option.

Looks like Vueling flies directly from Rome to Dubrovnik once a day (07:55-09:10 am). On July 12, the cost for this would be $62 per person. As with most low cost carriers, make sure you know the baggage rules, among other things, for Vueling.

We took Croatia Air from Dubrovnik into Rome - easy and lovely airline !

Thank you all! From a quick google search I had originally thought this was the best bet, but looking up other travel blogs, etc. it seemed that taking the ferry was a common option. Thanks again!

I had the same question of going from Italy to Dubrovnik. It seems Vueling's flight from Rome to Dubrovnik doesn't operate daily in October and there's no other direct flight options on the days we plan to travel, so we had to cut our Italy trip short by a couple of days.

Which boat option did you decide to go with?

Jamie, the OP is planning on flying. Your options for ferries are Bari to Dubrovnik or Ancona to Split. Or I guess possibly fly to another city in Croatia and make your way to Dbv.

Hi Jamie,

We decided to fly in the end. We are booking with Veuling - which in itself seems a little risky based on the reviews. Hope that you had a great trip though!

Skyscanner.net: rome - split.
Jadrolinja.hr or Blue line: Ancona - split (use train from rome to ancona). This is cheaper version. Takes 2 days. From Split you can take direct bus to Dubrovnik or catamaran Krilo.hr. In case you go by catamaran than i suggest visiting places on old backpacker route: Split - Hvar - Korcula - Dubrovnik.

Have a good time!
