REVISED ITINERARY - please feel free to offer suggestions/comments/tips???

Hi,
I'm planning a trip to Croatia/Italy/Greece this September for 5-6 weeks with hubby. We're a very active couple in our 50's. Flying from US to Croatia first. I should also point out that i'm trying to plan it so we're on Korcula for our 30TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY! I've spent HOURS trying to figure out the best way to get from Croatia to Italy; it's not an easy task! Have gone back and forth between Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb and Rovinj for beginning/end points. Would prefer to fly, but no good option out of Zagreb to Venice, and if we fly out of Split or Dubrovnik best option is to land in Rome. Would prefer to start Italy in Venice. So that being said, here's what I've come up with:

DAY 1 LAX TO DUBROVNIK – LEAVE ON 9/12 IF ADDING A DAY IN KORCULA, 9/13 IF NOT
DAY 2 ARRIVE 5PM DUBROVNIK
DAY 3 DUBROVNIK – KAYAK OUTER WALLS, CHECK OUT TOWN, CATCH UP ON SLEEP
DAY 4 DUBROVNIK IN AM, FERRY TO KORCULA IN PM (FERRY TIMES NOON OR 4PM?)
DAY 5 KORCULA – 30TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!!!
DAY 6 KORCULA AM, FERRY TO SPLIT PM, PICK UP RENTAL CAR
DAY 7 SPLIT – CITY/HISTORICAL SITES - DO WE NEED A CAR? OR PICK UP CAR THIS DAY INSTEAD?
DAY 8 SPLIT TO PLITVICE, STOP AT KRKA, HIKE, DRIVE TO PLITVICE FOR OVERNIGHT STAY IN PARK
DAY 9 HIKE PLITVICE, DRIVE TO ROVINJ (3 HOURS)
DAY 10 ROVINJ
DAY 11 ROVINJ – DROP OFF RENTAL CAR, OR DRIVE TO PULA, DROP RENTAL, OVERNIGHT IN PULA FOR EARLY MORNING FERRY
DAY 12 FERRY PULA TO VENICE ON TUES 9/24 (FERRY LEAVES 7:30 AM ; 3 HOUR FERRY)
OR
ADD A DAY KORCULA, FERRY ROVINJ TO VENICE ON WED 9/25 (3 HR 45MIN FERRY)

2 NIGHTS DUBROVNIK, 2 NIGHTS KORCULA, 2 NIGHTS SPLIT, 1 NIGHT PLITVICE, 3 NIGHTS ROVINJ (OR 2 NIGHTS ROVINJ/1 NIGHT PULA to be in PULA for early morning ferry)

Doable? Yes, just about.

Pleasant pace? Not to me.

You don’t need a hire car whilst in Split. Parking it can be a hassle there and you would be paying rental for a day that you don’t need.

No time for Trogir?

If you have the option of a ferry or a catamaran, opt for the ferry. They maybe slower, but if the seas cut up rough, the ferries will still run. I was there a couple of years ago in September and the Dubrovnik - Korcula- Hvar- Split catamaran was cancelled for 2 consecutive days as the seas were too strong.

Thanks Jennifer. I know it's a fast pace, but that's how we like to travel. Thanks for the heads up on the ferry vs catamaran. I didn't even start to look at options yet and didn't know there was more than one.

You mentioned no car needed in Split. We don't need one for the day we want to sightsee around the area to see the historical sights?

We found we didn't use our rental car while we were in Split. We stayed central for 2 nights, walked everywhere and did a bike tour also. We had a car for 10 days or so and while we were in Split we just paid to park it, but since you are picking one up, just pick it up when you are ready to leave.

Since you're aware that your pace is fast and you're OK with it, the Croatia portion of you itinerary should work. If you're going to add a day, I suggest adding it to Dubrovnik (possible day trip to Montenegro) rather than Korcula. I agree with others that you shouldn't pick up the rental car until you're ready to depart Split.

I'm not sure whether ferries are an option for Dubrovnik to Korcula and Korcula to Split, but both Jadrolinja and Krilo run catamarans on that route in September. I've had no problems buying tickets for September catamaran travel after arrival in Croatia.

For Croatia to Venice, I've used Venezia Lines catamarans. Their schedule shows sailings from Rovinj on both days you mention, but sailings from Pula only on the 24th. Hopefully you can find a reasonably-priced car rental that allows drop-off in Rovinj. I suggest you purchase Venezia Line tickets in advance as you'll be competing for seats with Venice day trippers. Consider the inexpensive upgrade to VIP Lounge.

Thank you for your suggestions! However, I've since revised my itinerary and we are now flying into Athens and doing Greece first. After Greece, then Croatia. While in Greece, we'll be staying on 2 islands for about a week total (and where we'll be celebrating our anniversary); Santorini and Mylos. Now I'm wondering if we should leave out Korcula (and any islands in Croatia) and instead add more time to Rovinj area where we will then take ferry to Venice.

Would love to hear any opinions!

I would omit Korcula since it is very similar to Dubrovnik, and add one day to both Dubrovnik and Split. Split is very different from Dubrovnik, more Roman. In Dubrovnik a day hiking around Lokrum Island, a 15 minute ferry ride, a nice swim and lunch makes for a great day. In Split a trip to Trogir for half a day is nice also. You do not need a car in Split. I find that many of the smaller towns/islands don’t warrant too much time unless you are beach goers or have family to visit. For example, Paula has the amphitheater but not much else besides beaches. The island of Krk is just beaches. They all have their small “old towns” for wandering and shopping, one might have a winery, another a nice Church, you get my gist. From your posting I gather you and your husband don’t want to sit around for days just people watching.
