Renting a Car in Croatia

Hi all,

We'd like to rent a car from Split to Ljubljana (via Istrian peninsula & Julian Alps) but the reviews for major car rental companies are full of negative reviews about being charged for non-existent or minuscule damage. Any recommendations of a no-hassle car rental company that allows for cross-border rentals?

Thank you in advance!!

Best,

Ben

We’ve rented many times in Croatia and drove into Slovenia. The high cost comes from dropping off in a different country. If you are returning in Croatia, the extra charge is around 100€, maybe less, to driving into another country.

We usually rent through Sixt. The last car we rented in Europe (Portugal) we went through booking.com cause they had better insurance. Never had to use the insurance so we can’t say about any payouts.

We did have a problem with CarWiz once. Upon return they tried to charge us an extra 400€ for some minor scratches, BUT, we had taken pictures of the scratches before we left the lot. We didn’t pay anything extra. Some people will take videos and include the agent in the film.

There are apparently lots of regional/local rental car companies in Croatia that get
good reviews, look backwards in the forum. But going into a different country may
trigger additional fees and such as noted.

Renting from Sixt is no hassle, but no matter what, taking pictures of the car before
you take it out is the best way to have data to contest any assertion of damage.

Without any additional information on your itinerary, another option is to rent from
Split to Zagreb, drop off the car/spend a little time in Zagreb, then take a 2 hour bus
to Ljubljana, see Ljubljana, and then rent again.

If you do set it up as a single rental, make sure you purchase a tollway vignette
for Slovenia or any other country to drive the car into.

Thanks so much Barbara and Shoeflyer for those helpful replies. (Further information on our rough itinerary added above.) I appreciate the rec for Sixt. Welcome others' thoughts and recommendations of favorable car rental companies and tips for avoiding damage hassles. We'll be sure to photo and video the entire car.

We rented from Enterprise in Split, dropped the car in Zagreb and traveled to Ljubljana. Rented from Europcar in LJU for our time in Slovenia. Both companies were hassle free with both pick up and drop off.
