We are going to Croatia in mid September and will be renting a car for part of our trip. We are picking up in Rijeka and returning in Split, before heading to Korcula on the ferry. We are looking for rental company suggestions. We also would like suggestions for the best/easiest places in both towns for the pick up/drop off. I have read that returning that car at the ferry dock in Split can be a hassle. Thanks so much!
I rented from Sixt for this exact itinerary. The office in Rijeka is 4-5 blocks from the
railroad station and the office in Split is maybe a mile east of the port.
I can say that the port area would not be my favorite place to drive; it's crowded and
lots of traffic. But returning would be a bit better than having to navigate that as
your first part of driving a rental car in a foreign country.
But you should be able to look up pickup/dropoff locations online and decide what
works best for your needs.
We rent cars in Rijeka often (my husband’s hometown). We usually rent through Sixt but this time we went through booking.com. The confirmation email is Rentalcars.com. We also took the insurance through them. An added bonus is that extra drivers are free. The pickup is just about next door to Sixt and not too far from the train station. It is just off the Korzo, the main shopping street. Cabs in Rijeka are very inexpensive.
But Sixt is fine too.
The drop off in Split is a little further from the pier. My husband drops us off and then goes to drop off the car and takes a cab back.
I really think that Rentalcars.com would be the best option since you can find all the main car hire companies there. You can compare all the prices and drop off places. It's gonna be easy for you to find the company that suits your needs.
