My family will be on the island of Vis for 5 nights in early August. I am trying to determine if we will need a rental car or not. Does anyone know if there are taxi cabs or any other sort of transportation to get around the island if we are staying in Vis Town but decide to go to Komiza, a winery or different beaches? If buses are available, are they a good mode of transportation or would a car be preferred? Thank you.

I would plan on getting a car. There is a bus that goes back and forth from Vis to Komiza, but the real appeal of the island are all of the little cove beaches only accessible by parking and walking. It has been many years since I visited, so you could also check with the tourist office, as transport options could have increased, and August will be quite different from May when I was there. I visited as a couple and rode on the back of a scooter. Bikes are an option for the extremely fit (big hill to get out of town).
