Travelling in Croatia and Italy in September. We will be 4 adults with one med size suitcase and one day pack each. I am concerned about luggage space as most of the rentals offered are makes/models i am not at all familiar with. Can anyone make a recommendation?
thanks much

I would have thought you need something like a Ford Mondeo Estate, or larger. When renting cars I use Argus Car Hire - http://www.arguscarhire.com/ , which has details of how many people and bags the car is supposed to take.
We had four adults in three different cars - two were mid sized sedans and one was a land rover. The mid size sedans worked but only because we all were using soft sided luggage (in fact the RS convertible carry-on). If we'd had hard or formed luggage, it wouldn't work.
thanks for fast response and useful link
sorry to be so uninformed but when the site says 4 suitcases how do i know what size they are allowing?
hope you can help

If you 'mouse-over' the icon, it says "Flight sized carry-on bags", which normally means about 22in x 18in x 10in. Looking at the Passat Estate on the Argus site it is rated as 5 bags. I own a Passat estate, the luggage compartment is 39 x 44 x 20, so it would certainly fit five bags plus quite a bit more as well. It looks like Argus are being conservative with their estimates of how much you can get in.
If you think you have found the right sized car, Google something like 'Ford Mondeo Estate Luggage capacity' and you should get the information you need.
