On a recent trip, I stayed a couple of nights in Dubrovnik before spending my final night in Cavtat. (I had an early morning flight and wanted to be closer to the airport, which is a bit far out of town).
What a great decision! Cavtat was wonderful. A lovely little seaside town with a beautiful promenade and fun swimming areas. The food was exceptional too. (Try the risotto!)
Cavtat was also quieter and much less touristy than Dubrovnik, even though it's not that far away. Dubrovnik is only 20 minutes away by shuttle boat, if you want to go into the city.
Highly recommend Cavtat!
Cavtat is a lovely place and we’ve been there for lunch, etc. But, if you are there to see Dubrovnik, stay in Dubrovnik, if possible within the walls. I know a 20 minute shuttle boat is quick, but not quick enough for us, especially if we want to go back to our room during the day.
A typical day when visiting Dubrovnik could be
7:00 walk to and enjoy uncrowded beach
8:30 or 9:00 walk back to room and shower
9:30 step outside and have morning coffee/tea on the stradun and people watch
10:00 go back to room to freshen up, pick up needed items for the day, then go about our planned activities.
Maybe take a short nap during the hottest time or back to the room to drop off purchases or get something I forgot or change for an evening event.
My point being, if you had to take the ferry every time you wanted or needed to go back to your room it would become an annoyance very quickly. We have had this experience in other cities. Now we try to stay in hotels in the heart of any city we visit, just easier for us.
Good for you guys. I found the opposite. With the heat and the crowds, about a half day inside the Dubrovnik walls was enough. I much preferred swimming in the lovely Adriatic at Cavtat and relaxing along the promenade at night. Touristy food seemed to be the only options in Dubrovnik as well. But the food in Cavtat was exceptional, with an ocean sunset view! Cavtat was also the perfect spot to grab a bus to Kotor, which I did. Amazing!
Dubrovnik is the antitheses of everything on my list of travel enjoyments, and yet it remains one of my favorite cities .... for 2 full days, no more. I've 6stopped in Cavtat and both times i regretted not staying. A night or two in Cavtat would be a wonderful idea on the way to the airport or to Montenegro.
