Popping into Montenegro

My wife and I will be doing a week-long walking/hiking trip on the Dalmatian Coast next month, beginning in Dubrovnik. Prior to our hike, we have two days where we’ll be staying south of the city (Sheraton in Mlini) to adjust to jet lag and basically hang out. But we’re also assessing a quick trip into Montenegro.

Any guidance on doing this without making it an all-day excursion? We’re open to driving ourselves or hiring a guide/tour, but since we consider these first two days to be R&R before we step up our activity, we’re not looking to do anything too vigorous or time consuming. Our hiking trip starts in Dubrovnik, so we don’t see the need to go there before our formal trip. We’ll also hit Korcula on our hikes.

I think you could make your Montenegro excursion as short or as long as you want. I assume you know what your interested in seeing. Most of the organized tours are full-day, but you could hire a private guide/driver, or rent a car, and then you can tailor the tour to fit your schedule.

It's easy enough to rent a car and spend as much time as you want. I took an all-day trip and it still felt too rushed, but the trip covered a lot of areas.

There are public buses between Dubrovnik and Kotor that give you a very good view of the Bay of Kotor and don't tie you to a bus-tour schedule. You should be able to find the scnedules on buscroatia.com.

Thanks for the (speedy) replies. And the bus hadn't occurred to me, but looking at the link that seems very doable. (Albeit with a bit of back-tracking since we're staying south of Dubrovnik.) Re car rental or hiring a driver/guide, any idea how easy that is to arrange at the last minute? I doubt we'd want to lock into this before we arrived. Also if anyone can suggest a potential source of guides, I'd be interested in hearing them. We very much appreciate these insights!

I can't answer the "last minute" query since I rarely do anything last minute (mostly because I want to lock down a lower price with an early booking). If you need a car that's automatic, I definitely wouldn't wait until last minute because there is likely not a big supply of them to begin with. Prices are always much higher last minute too. You can find guides easily on TripAdvisor...I used Viator (reseller) but was totally fine with it for a one-day tour. It was a lot of sights though so it felt too rushed for me..and it took most of the day.

@Agnes...funny, these first two days are the only part of our two-week trip that's not planned--purposely so. But it's starting to look like I'm planning them just the same. Old habits dies hard, I guess.

If i remember, its about 3 hours between DBV and Kotor. Not a quick drive...but its quite scenic and beautiful.
