Please Help with the last leg of our trip - Dubrovnik/Islands/Split/Pula.

I need advice for the last leg of our Slovenia/Croatia/Bosnia/ Montenegro trip. (Our flights arrive and leave from Venice.) Our itinerary is:

Day 1- Arrive in Piren Slovenia via ferry from Venice. Pick-up rental car.

Day 2/3/4 - Drive to Ljubljana. 3 days touring Slovenia from Ljubljana.

Day 5/6- Train to Zagreb. Tour Zagreb.

Day 7/8 - Pick up rental car, drive to Plitvic Lake. Tour Plitvic.

Day 9/10 –Drive to Mostar. 2 nights in Mostar.

Day 11/12 – Drive to Sarajevo. 2 nights in Sarajevo.

Day 12 – 16 – Drive to Dubrovnik. 4 nights in and around Dubrovnik

Day 17/18/19 – Drive to Montenegro, tour Montenegro based in Kotor.

Day 20 – 25 – Drive back to Croatia then OPEN. Perhaps Mijet and Split?

Day 26 – Ferry from Pula to Venice.

We’ll appreciate any ideas for our last days. We would love to see the islands and Split on our way back to the ferry from Pula. Is there a car ferry we can use to spend a few nights on Mijet, and/or another island and then ferry to Split? We plan to return the rental car in Pula but could just as easily return it in Dubrovnik and rent another car for Split – Pula if that is advisable, and if we won’t need a car on the islands.

We’ve done our best not to be too rushed and hope to end our trip with a few days in one or two locations rather than a more hectic pace. The ferry leaves very early from Pula so we will need to spend one night there. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Had you considered doing this as a one-way trip from north to south and fly back to Venice from Dubrovnik at the end, to save the drive back north? There are direct flights now several days a week between Dubrovnik and Venice. In that case, I would drive to Montenegro first and drop the car in Dubrovnik as you arrive - you probably won't want/need it in Dubrovnik itself.

You might also skip the car in Piran - take the bus to Ljubljana and rent a car for a day as needed (I recommend a car for exploring Slovenia around Ljubljana but not for tiny Ljubljana itself; I assume you are planning day trips to Lake Bled etc.), unless you were planning stops between Piran and Ljubljana.

Thank you for your response and willingness to share your knowledge with us! The flights from Dubrovnik won't suit our schedule. We do hope to visit Split so don't mind backtracking to that point but would like to incorporate a visit to Mijet, and perhaps another island on, the way. Do you know if that is possible? Which islands would you recommend that are more low-key, quiet environments rather than night life focused?

We plan to stop in Lipica and Skocjanski Caves en route to Ljubljiana so the rental car is necessary.

Sorry, I really don't know anything about Mijet. I have been to Korcula, which is nice and I think would be more "low key" and perhaps what you seek.
