Pazin as a base ?

Hi
we (family of 2 adults and 2 kids) will be in Croatia in july. We have plan 4-5 nights in Istria (Motovun, Vsar, Rovinj, Pula.....) . We have thought about stayng in an appartment in Pazin because it seems central. Is there any good restaurant there? Groceries ? Is it a good central place or we should look elsewhere ?

Thanks !

I've only been through Pazin on a one-day tour. It's my impression that it's the administrative center for Croatian Istria. I am sure you can find decent restaurants, and of course there are grocery stores. Aside from a zip line and I think a small historical museum, I believe it's not long on major tourist sights. (I confess to not having checked on Trip Advisor, something you definitely should do.) Pazin does have a good central location. Not having driven in Istria, I am not in a position to comment on any challenges basing in Pazin might present.

I would warn you to stay far, far away from the toilets in the Pazin bus station. They were the filthiest I have ever seen, and I've had a lot of opportunities to compare.

Pazin is great for touring the whole area and it has several good restaurants to choose from. A short drive and you can go to Gračišće and Beram for more quality places to eat.

We go to Istria for Easter every year. We typically rent a villa so the kids can run around and swim, if it’s warm enough. Pazin is usually the closest town to our villa, so we go there for grocery shopping as there are several larger grocery stores on the outskirts (and smaller groceries in town). We’ve eaten out in Pazin a few times, but didn’t find anything special. The town is an administrative center, not really much to look at or do. I’d highly recommend looking at renting a villa instead in a more village like setting.

Villa rental ? My guess is that will be too much expensive and a quick look on myistria (or something like that) confirms it !

Any ideas of small places around Pazin that are nice ?

HI bucephale,

I think it is good choice to stay in Pazin. You can reach any point in Istria region within 30-40 minutes (at most).
Regarding staying in appartment- I would not recommend it - as there are quite few villa built in Pazin/central Istria area builit recently that are not so pricey and sometimes are even cheaper than appartments. Check this web (this is local travel agency from Pazin specialized in villas) https://villsy.com/croatia/istria/central-istria
Regarding grocery stores, Pazin is quite well equiped with them. You have local Lidl: https://openhours.hr/spots/lidl-pazin-43-istarske-divizije-1745212638 and big store of Plodine https://openhours.hr/spots/supermarket-plodine-pazin-sime-kurelica-b-724ceb0772
There are many quality, organic restaurants in Pazin area - where you can taste local specialties which are made on local farms. More info you can find here http://www.central-istria.com/hr/gastronomy-gourmet/restaurants-restorani-konobe
Hope this helps you
Let me know if you need more info

Thanks for that answer !
why not recommend an appartment ? We will be there for sleeping, eat a quick breakfast and that's about it. We have found something with great reviews In Pazin for only 65 euros by night, it would be very hard to find a villa at that price,

Hi bucephale,
Read from your question that you want to stay (which I read as spending more time there) . If is the case as you described that app is also not an bad option.
Hope you will enjoy your holidays in Istria.
Best
Toni
