We would like to stop for an afternoon at Plitvice Lakes on our way from the southern Dalmatian coast to Slovenia. We will have a rental car and will have all of our luggage with us. Is there a secure place to park or store our bags while we walk around the lakes for a few hours? Or is the risk of leaving all of our luggage unattended in this high-tourist area not worth it?
We parked in one of the designated lots and left our luggage (out of sight) in the car while we hiked for several hours. We didn't have a problem. Talked to another couple at our hotel who did the same. No guarantee but it should be o.k.
Hi Jordan, we parked in one of the lots (not the hotel lots) and there was a parking lot attendant booth and a exit barrier to prevent leaving the lot without paying. The lot was pretty busy and open so it would be harder to break in unnoticed. Seemed like a safe place to park and any potential thieves would have a hundred other cars to choose from with luggage also, so your odds are pretty good for not being the ones they steal from as long as you don't leave valuables visible.
Your stuff will be fine. We were just at the lakes and everything is secure.
I do question, however, how you are going to fit in a few hours at the lakes driving from S. Dalmatia to Slovenia? How you going to swing that? The lakes need pretty much a full day, if not two, to be seen properly.
We spent a morning and early afternoon hiking at Plitvice Lakes--that was enough time for us! We think that 2 days would be too much--we especially like Slovenia and wouldn't recommend taking time away from destinations there.
Thank you for all of your comments! Rick Steves recommends about that time - 3 hours - for the Lakes, which I think will be enough time for us.
Does anyone have advice for renting a car in Croatia, we also plan on visiting Plitvice Lakes.
