One Week on the Dalmatian Coast

My friend and I are planning to spend about a week along the Dalmatian coast, flying in from Naples to Dubrovnik. The idea is to make our way up to Split, from Dubrovnik, and then carry on to another destination.

I'm wondering, is it best to stay in Dubrovnik and Split, and plan day trips from each town? Or do you recommend spending a few days on an island such as Hvar in the middle? We are used to travelling every 2 days or so, so we have no issue with constant movement, although the idea of staying in a central place is fine too. If we choose to stay only in Dubrovnik/Split, are the ferries relatively frequent, particularly if we want to stay for an evening on Hvar? I have been trying to look up the ferry schedules online but am not sure I am interpreting them correctly. Any advice would be appreciated!

You do not say when you are travelling. There is only one direct flight to Dubrovnik from Naples with Easyjet and this is only a 3 times a week service in peak season.

Travelling around Croatia takes time, so if I were you, I would have 3 nights in Dubrovnik and 4 in Split. Most accommodation on the islands has a 3 night minimum booking plus the boat doesn't work that well time wise heading from Dubrovnik, as it arrives in the evening.

Arrive in Dubrovnik at your accommodation early afternoon and explore the city then and the following day. Take a day trip to Mljet or Mostar.

Take the bus to Split (more options than the catamaran that only has 1 sailing a day, arriving at 20.45). This takes c 5.5 hours door to door. Explore Split - a full day. Have another day in nearby Trogir. Take a long day trip to Krka or Plitvice national parks. Have a day trip to Brac, which is closer than Hvar. Hvar is further and the last boat back is at 19.45 from Hvar town. Alternatively, take the ferry from Stari Grad on Hvar at 8 or 11pm, arriving back in Split 2 hours later. Stari Grad and Hvar town are 30 minutes apart by taxi, so if you want to stay later, I would recommend spending the day in Stari Grad, which is a picturesque place set around the harbour - plenty of restaurants etc.

See krilo.hr and jadrolinija.hr for ferry/catamaran details.
