More time in Split/Islands or explore Istria (Rovinj)?

Taking a family trip (2 parents, 3 adult kids) to Dubrovnik after a week in Italy. 5 days in Dubrovnik, planning to visit Cavtat, Mijet National Park (we like to hike), and hopefully Kotor. Kids fly home and hubby and I have another week. Thinking of taking a boat to Korcula for one night and then on to Split for 2 days, rent a car and go to Plitvce National Park. Since we were thinking of flying out of Venice, thought we'd go to Rovinj for the remainder of the week and take the ferry over to Venice. But even as I write this, I think its too much. Would we be better to stay longer in Korcula (or another island) and Split and then maybe try to fly out of Zagreb after visiting Plitvce? Flying out of Zagreb is a bit of a challenge with our United travel certificates (due to trip cancelled), but could figure that out if better idea. Would appreciate your ideas and feedback. Thank you! Elaine

So, you have five extra days in Croatia but flying out of Zagreb is not convenient, correct? What about flying out of Venice, will that work? If flying home from Venice works better, rent a car in Dubrovnik and drive to Split and spend a night or two (4h). From Split drive to Rovinj (5h) and sleep there. You can also take a day trip to Pula (45-minutes) before taking a 3h 15m ferry to Venice.

Time of year? That might affect availability of transportation from Istria back to Italy. I'm not sure that ferry runs all year round. Another option, not used by me but mentioned positively on the forum, is the shuttle service offered by GoOpti.

Korčula is very similar to Dubrovnik architecturally, so if time is tight you could skip it. People refer to it as a mini Dubrovnik. Split is so different, Roman, not medieval. From there you could go to Sibenik then to Rovinj and onto Venice if that is a better fit. Check the website Croatiaferries.com. It gives you all the ferry schedules, month by month, and prices, for all the connections within Croatia and to Italy. You could see Krka National Park which is closer. It will tell you which companies run each ferry and then you can go to their website to purchase your tickets. We just purchased ours for September.

I would want more than one night in Korcula--plus you might want to check the bus and ferry schedules to see how much time you would actually get there. There are daily buses from Dubrovnik to Korcula, plus I believe Krilo operates the catamaran, and Jadrolinija may have service on this route as well. Assuming you mean two nights in Split and that you would do one overnight at Plitvice, that leaves three nights--that would be about right for Rovinj, but then it does make it pretty tight for getting to Venice.
Have you checked flights out of Split and Zadar as well? You could make it an island trip and come back for a Plitvice and Istria trip in the future. There are many great places for hiking--the Makarska area, any island, Paklenica near Zadar. If you are there in summer or early fall, really anything is possible in terms of outdoors. good luck!

We are leaving on September 7th. Flight direct from JFK Dubrovnik...we will end in Rovinj and Porec. Also taking the ferry to Venice on the 21st, flying back to US on the 23rd. Should I buy ferry tickets this soon?

On the rare chances of getting Covid ( Fully Vaccinated ) anyone have a plan for isolation or what the process will be? We probably get tested when we get to Venice.
