Hello! We will be in Zagreb May 1 next year. Trying to decide if we should travel that day or stay in Zagreb? Is everything closed up for the holiday or is it worthwhile to spend the day there? Thanks so much for your help! I can’t find anything relevant on the internet!
Zagreb is a fabulous city and a wonderful surprise. Places to visit are: The Museum of Naïve Art, Dolac open-air fruit & veggie market, Garden Brewery, St Mark's Church, Zagreb Cathedral and stroll Tkalčićeva Street. Tourist attractions should be in full swing.
See Zagreb while it’s not yet being overtouristed.
Croatia Airlines just this year added flights from around Europe into Zagreb. My guess is it won’t be the same relatively undiscovered destination in a couple years.
I’m just concerned about May 1 being a national holiday. I’m wondering if everything will be closed, in which case maybe it would be a better day to travel to our next destination?
According to AI, the touristy areas will be operating as normal on May 1st.
Stop using AI. It is wrong. Most museums, attractions, shops will be closed on holidays. Of the ones listed St Mark's Church is closed essentially permanently due to security reasons and cathedral is still closed for renovation and will be for awhile.
As May Day is Labor Day, the point is to give the workers some time off. Families use this day to have a BBQ or to get out of the city. In 2026, May 1 falls on a Friday, so that tells me that the everyone will flee to the coast on that weekend.
Is Zagreb worthwhile? It depends on the rest of your itinerary. I've been to Zagreb more times than I can count as well as many trips to other parts of Croatia. I can think of other parts of the country that I would rather be.
The Miseum of Broken Relationships is a lot of fun. It is privately run and open every day of the year for long hours.
