Makarska?

My friend and I will be in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina in early August and we would like to spend some time in Croatia.
I have a few questions:
1. Is Makarska a good base camp if we want to take day trips to Brač, Hvar, Dubrovnik, Plitvice, etc.?
2. We most likely will not have a car, do you suggest we rent one?
3. Favourite beach to visit in that area?
4. Best place to Snorkel?
5. Best website for booking trains/buses/tours?

We will probably spend most of our time at the beach and doing a few touristy things.
Any other information you think we should know about would also be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

From Makarska you can get to Sumartin on Brac. You can’t get to Hvar from there unless you head up to Split then take the ferry or catamaran.

At that time of year, you need to stay at Plitvice the night before you enter. It’s a 3+ hour drive each way and longer by bus, so too far for a day trip.

You can take the Krilo catamaran to Dubrovnik, which takes 3 hours each way and you will get about 3.5 hours there. You will need advance tickets.

I always hire a car, but it’s your choice. If you are staying mostly in Makarska, you won’t need one.

I haven’t been to any beaches or snorkelled here.

There aren’t any trains.

From Makarska, Korcula would be an easier day trip than Hvar. It's just over an hour away on the same Krilo catamaran as Dubrovnik. You can also use that same catamaran to visit Split (1.5 hours each way), possibly adding a side trip by bus to nearby Trogir. Imo Dubrovnik and Plitvice require too much travel time to be viable day trips from Makarska.
