Lucca, Italy (or Anacona) to Croatia

Hello! We are finishing up a month in Europe and flying out of Split November 3rd. Right now we are in Lucca, Italy, and need to return our rental car somewhere in Italy this coming Monday, Oct. 27th. We were originally thinking of taking the train to Venice, and then a ferry to Rovinj, now realizing that is likely not possible due to how late it is in October. The next best option appears to drive to Anacona from Lucca (which take about 4 hours, 10 by train), and then take the overnight ferry in Anacona (Jadrolinija) to Split. Any thoughts about other ways to get to Croatia? We have also looked into Croatian airlines, but are on a budget. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

You could drive (or take a train) to Trieste, Italy. From there you could bus to Rijeka & go on to Split by ferry or bus.

I think the overnight ferry from Ancona would be simpler, though. It depends on what else you'd like to see before getting to Split.

The overnight ferry from Ancona is certainly the classic option. If you go to www.skyscanner.com and search broadly from Italy to Croatia, you might find a decent flight price. For instance, on Oct. 28, I see Bologna-Zagreb nonstop for $158 on TAP.
