We will be traveling in May and concentrating on the west coast. We will not be driving but rely on busses and drivers. We prefer to stay in a few places and day trip from a base. We will be in Split , only an hour fro Krka, but have the impression we will be missing out if we do not visit Plitvice which is 3 hours. Need advice! Certainly will make the trip and stay overnight if Plitvice if it would be much better experience than Krka
Advice please.
Not too many people on this forum have been to both places. I've only been to Plitvice (but 3 times, which I think tells you what I think about it). Someone compared the two on this forum within the last year or two. You might find that post if you search for Krka (which comes up much, much less often than Plitvice).
It is your holiday - do what YOU want, not what others do!
Krka is as beautiful as Plitvice, but tends to be less busy. People are like lemmings and therefore tend to follow each other if they have read an article recommending a place. The RS Adriatic tour goes to Plitvice not Krka, therefore many people on this forum will have followed the same itinerary.
You can swim at Krka, not Plitvice, but May maybe too early for that.
Look at online pictures to assist your decision. My vote goes to Krka because of the Plitvice crowds.
They are both beautiful parks. Krka has a magnificent cascading waterfall called Skradinski Buk that dwarfs any single waterfall at Plitvice. However, overall I still prefer Plitvice; if I had to choose one all else being equal, I would choose Plitvice every time. It's just an amazing park with dozens of little waterfalls, seemingly another one at every turn in the path, and huge, turquoise-colored lakes full of trout (no fishing allowed). Plitvice does get super busy, though - really best to get into the park first thing in the morning (7am) when it opens.
But given the extra travel time from Split by public transit, maybe I would visit Krka and save Plitvice for next time - combined with northern Croatia and Slovenia, which would make a fantastic trip all on its own.
Krka is nice but if you haven't visited Plitvice before, there shouldn't be any dillema. Plitvice is on a different level. Pure magic and nature at its best. I stayed overnight because one afternoon is not enough at least for me. I was there twice and plan to visit it again. One thing, it gets crowded and touristy especially during summer but May should be fine.
Both of them is worth visit. I have been in both.
However, if you are in split, I advice you take one hour to go to krka instead of using 3 hours to go to plitvice. It is because plitvice really needs a whole day to visit all 16 lakes. Some people spent one night to visit both upper and lower lakes. 3 hours is not enough. Also it takes 5 hours trip from split to plitvice but only one and a half to krka.
