Korcula or stay on mainland with teenagers

Help needed please. We're traveling to Croatia in June, 2 adults & 2 teenagers 13 & 16. Staying in Dubrovnik 4 nights and was thinking of staying on Korcula 10 nights. Is that too long? It looks beautiful to me and I was thinking we could swim/kayak, explore the town/island, do a couple of day trips to other islands. Debating hiring a car or is it possible to get by with public transport? Any advice on best areas to stay?

Alternatively would it be better to hire a car and travel up the coast to Markaska or Omis? Are we limiting ourselves by staying on Korcula? We don't want to pack up every few days to do multiple destinations either though as need some relaxation time.

Any advice appreciated.

Could easily try a different island nearby, Hvar, Brac,

I don’t think you’ll regret staying on Korcula that long if you do end up doing it. Unless you’re the type to get antsy and want to move. Seems like a pretty great spot for extended relaxing

We really enjoyed staying on Korcula. Ten days is OK if you break it up with a few day trips. Korcula is a wonderful place to stay, using it as a base.

We loved Korcula, and IMO it would be a great place for a base. You could spend one day utilizing the hop on/hop off water taxi to some of the smaller islands. Attending the Moreska Sword Dance is a unique and enjoyable experience. We did not find it necessary to rent a car while on the island. Our stay at Apartment Marina was terrific! Excellent hosts, who picked us up from the ferry; beautiful, well equipped apartment with a gorgeous view of the harbor. We did not want to leave. Highly recommend! https://www.booking.com/hotel/hr/apartment-marina-korcula.html

On korčula you could rent bikes. 2 years ago we saw tours with ATV’s. And yes, you can take the water taxi to smaller islands for a day of swimming. There is nice hiking too.

Check croatiaferries.com for times and schedules for ferries to other nearby islands.

Every year we visit there is more and more things available to do.

I don’t think an outdoorsy family would tire of it, maybe just look at the ferry time over to the mainland. It should not be difficult to pop over if you have a car and go to places like Omis with an early start. (Check drive time of course).
Then you may need to be back in Dubrovnik or on to Split for your flight out.
I’d do ten days there!

Thank you all for the responses. Would it be better to stay closer to Korcula old town or can anyone recommend a nice area that has some coffee shops, restaurants, nice beach, access to activities? I had a quick look at car hire and it seems significantly more expensive to hire on Korcula than on the mainland, have you found this to be the case? Thank you

I would want to be close enough to Korcula that you could walk to dinner. Lumbarda might have enough going on.
This website is pretty helpful: https://www.korculainfo.com/
It was probably me suggesting a car rental on an island, but I meant more if you wanted a day or so of exploration but were otherwise using catamarans to get from place to place. If you want the car most of the time, then it is probably best to pick up as you leave Dubrovnik and drop in Split (I think you are still heading there). You will be limited to car ferries, but I think that will still work for your plans. Just be sure to make sure you are looking at car ferry schedules on the Jadrolinija website (they run catamarans too).
