We will be visiting Croatia in September. It it possible to day trip to Korcula or Hvar from Split? While I understand that the weather will be warm and we could enjoy some pebble beach time, I am more interested in sight seeing. Ideally we would take a morning ferry to the island and then return to Split late in the day. Can you get around well enough without a car on the island, (walkable or local buses)?
Looking at Jadrolinija and Krilo sailing schedules between Split and Hvar, it doesn’t appear that a day trip on your own will be practical this year. However, it appears that Atlas Travel offers a Hvar excursion from Split for about €49, departing at 9:30 and returning at 18:15. Not sure whether it would be offered every day or just a few times per week. IMO, Korcula is too far for a day trip from Split.
Since Frank has already checked both companies for their catamaran schedules, I will trust his answer. To start with, they don't normally leave very early in the day. I shall use this opportunity to plug the new 5th edition of Rick's Croatia/Slovenia book, which we just got in stock in our store today.
Yeah ferries tend to run on schedules that rarely allow quick visits. From Split to Korcula...no way, either by ferry or car. Hvar certainly seems possible, only 35 min or so by fastest option, 2 hours by most frequent option, but the schedules drive you insane trying to figure something that gets you there early, allows you hours there, then back to Split before midnight.
As Korcula and Hvar are really non-options, I would consider Brac, Trogir or Sibenik as day trips instead.
