Hey all, we're in very early days of considering an Italy (likely starting & maybe ending in Venice, depending on car rental drop off issues), Slovenia, Croatia road trip this summer - likely two weeks or thereabouts. We're aiming to stay out of cities, and focus on nice coastlines, beaches, small villages, and nature. As we get started - any hot tips, places to be sure to include or places to be sure to avoid? It's going to be high season and hot, so we're trying to bear all of that in mind and stay a bit off the beaten track. We don't need to see everything, we prefer to move at a slower pace, and maybe stay put for 3-4 days in a nice location and really enjoy it. I'd love your thoughts as we get started!
There is nothing off the beaten track in Croatia in summer unless you get far away from the coast.
I have only been in Croatia in late May and June, but there is so much shoreline--surely there are some places to stretch out a bit. Two weeks will be eaten up much quicker than you think though. If it has to be Milan, I would drive toward Slovenia, stepping wherever you intended in Italy (was that part of the plan?), then south into Istria and maybe head to Cres or Losinj?
You might consider takign train to Venice from Milan and taking a ferry over (Venezialines) if you only want to use the car in Croatia.
