Istria: car traffic in july ?

Hi !
we are planing our summer trip and we have think about 4-5 nights in Istria. We would be in istria july 12 (friday) until july 16-17 (tuesday or wednesday). We have plan to base ourselves in Pazin and drive all around istria (Porec, Rovinj, Pula, Motovun, Hum....)from there.

We have read that summer weekend can be a nightmare on Istria road. We can change the date so we wont be there on weekend but that would be hard since i would mean to criss-cross around Croatia and Slovenia since our road is : Venice-Piran-Postojna-Istria-Zagreb-Ljublana-Bled-Verona-Dolomites-Venice.

Any advices for us ?

Thanks a lot !

Thanks a lot Cro on the go !

Since we will cross the border on friday that means we could see some delays. Coastel towns in weekend must be submerged too I guess ?

My initial question came after reading Rick Steve,s book. who said that in summer weekends driving in Istria can be a nightmare.

Even crossing borders in july 2 years ago didn't take more than 5-10 minutes.
Don't change any plans

Hi bucephale

I see from your other post you are also considering Plitvice. In my opinion, I would take one day/night away from Istria and add it to Plitvice to make sure you can stay the night and get to the park early. Istria is not that big -- for example you can easily see Pula as a half-day trip from Rovinj. You and your girls will love Croatia -- it's beautiful. enjoy

As you probably know, the Italian annual holiday is August, Ferogosto. That is when Istria really fills up with car traffic. Pazin is off the coast roads and a great central base to explore Istria in all directions. Once you get there, it will all be much easier. German and Austrian traffic to the coast and islands uses main routes . Your trip up to Zagreb is going in the right direction against flow.
