Island boat trips

We, 8 adults, are traveling in Croatia for 10 days in mid September. We are trying to determine if we should stay in Split or Trogir for 3 days. We want to travel to the outer island of Hvar on a day trip and possible another island on another day. I can find boats leaving out of Spit, but only expensive private boats out of Trogir. Is this right? Opinions/ideas on boats and Split vs Trogir would be great. Mahalo!

Trogir and Split are only 30 minutes apart by bus. Because accommodation may be a challenge for your large group, I would let accommodations be the determining factor.
Split will certainly have more options for boat travel being larger and a port. There are some public ferries out of Trogir such as to Drvenik Mali. https://www.putovnica.net/en/transport/passenger-vehicle-car-ferry-split-trogir-seget-donji-drvenik-mali-drvenik-veli-jadrolinija
These are smaller islands for a beach day or a hike.

Staying in Split you can do a day trip to Trogir. Just using local transport. Then pick the island Hvar or Korcula. Staying on Hvar, one night you can visit Korcula. Going by catamaran in afternoon and going back in morning. One hour by catamaran.
