Is October the off season in Croatia/Slovenia?

We are planning to fly from Rome to Split on September 29, 2015. We have a great 20-day itinerary planned for Croatia/Slovenia/Vienna. I am wondering whether we will encounter much difficulty with ferry and train schedules from Sept 29-October 18. Is there much activity in these countries during that time? We hate to visit towns that are "dead." Also, traditionally how is the weather? We are beach people and would love to enjoy them in warmth. We will be renting a car in Dubrovnik on October 6 for a week after touring that city for a couple days. We will drive through Croatian and Slovenia and will return the car in Zagreb to avoid a different country dropoff fee. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Weather is traditionally lovely at that time and so is swimming at sheltered swim beaches, even if it's not the time that most Europeans head to the beach. Trains are not affected by any significant seasonality, but ferries can be. Our tours are still visiting and I would not really call it off-season.

October is getting to be off season. The larger centres would not likely be affected but in some of the smaller place, restaurants and shops start to close for the season. As Laura mentioned, you will notice the largest change in ferry schedules. I would suggest you take everything in stride and don't panic if there is not a ferry when you want it. You will fit right in with the Croatian culture :)
