Is it now mandatory to have a spare wheel when driving in Croatia?

In a recent newsletter from a car insurance company, I read that it is now mandatory to have a spare wheel in the car when driving in Croatia (the same goes for Spain).

I had not heard this before and also wondered about how that works with cars that use run-flat tires and have no storage for a spare wheel.

Can anyone confirm (with a source)?

Certainly the rules regarding a spare tyre have been in place in Spain for a number of years, it's not a recent law. In fact it's outdated due to the increased use of run flat tyres. I've been renting cars in Spain for a number of years and I don't ever recall having one with a spare tyre. I suspect the situation is the same in Croatia.

It would be difficult to enforce a law if you've rented a car that did not come equipped with a spare tyre or even the room to carry one.

We have a rental now in Croatia. When I go out later I will check.
