In Zagreb for 2 days

In Croatia for first time. We will be in Zagreb for 2 days before tour starts. What should I see? Is the town walkable? Suggestions on where to eat?
Any feedback welcome!

Did you receive the Croatia & Slovenia guidebook? If so, there’s a good self-guided walking tour that’s worth taking. There’s also the the Museum of Broken Relationships, Museum of Naïve Art, Dolac open-air fruit & veggie market, Garden Brewery, St Mark's Church, Zagreb Cathedra and I especially enjoyed strolling along Tkalčićeva Street.

Yes, it's very walkable. It's a pleasant town with some interesting architecture and buildings and few quirky museums. The Rick Steves guide has a good walking tour as I recall - I followed it on my first visit years ago. I returned again last October and had only one night and just wandered around the upper town and the main square for a few hours.

Barbara, one of our posters who's a regular visitor to Croatia, reported last year that at least some of the large museums (not the museums mentioned in previous replies) remained closed at that time due to earthquake damage, so you should check museum websites for current information on status. I enjoyed many museums in Zagreb and am sorry they're having so much trouble with the repairs.

Both the naive art museum (quite small) and the Museum of Broken Relationships are very enjoyable, but the naive art museum is upstairs, and I don't recall an elevator. If climbing stairs is an issue, check the museum website for definitive information.

The Zagreb Cathedral and St. marks are currently closed due to renovations. The the ethnographic museum in lower town is open. Zagreb is very walkable. Take the funicular either up to or down from upper town. The two museums acraven mentions in upper town are open.
You can climb the tower in upper town, not too high.
I would go to the TI and see what’s going on cause you don’t say when you will be there.

I just got back from Zagreb and loved it. I only had a day and a half there, and walked the heck out it. It’s a cool city to explore, with a fascinating mix of architecture. The old town is very walkable. There are a lot of little courtyards, passages and underground tunnels that seem to connect everything. And the people are awesome (everywhere in Croatia honestly.) It’s a pretty chill city. Coffee and ice cream cafes are always buzzing. This will be a good place to warm up for your tour.

The Museum of Broken Relationships was terrific, and can be very moving. It’s not just kitschy fun. Much of the upper town is undergoing renovations, along with some key sites like the Cathedral. Thankfully, the city’s atmosphere more than makes up for it.

We loved Zagreb, too, and even if some museums are closed, it’s a wonderful city to explore, very atmospheric. It’s very different from Dubrovnik and Split. If it’s open, we really liked the Museum of Naive Art. There is lots of interesting graffiti in Zagreb which makes it very interesting as well.

Thank you for the feedback to those who were recently in Zagreb. Although we are sad that some sights will not be available to see when we are there it is so helpful to know what museums and things of interest will be open. We are glad to hear that the city is walkable. We are using all the feedback we have gotten thus far, along with Rick Steves Croatia book to make a walking itinerary for the 2 days.
Thank you fellow travelers!

If the Museum of Naive Art is closed, there is a new store (in 2019) in the lower town near the Cathedral that sells naive art, which is really village scenes painted on glass. You can go there to see some of that style.

If you can catch a football game in town, sit near Jelisic Square and scream with the locals.

For Austria-Hungarian food, Restaurant Pulcher in the lower town.

Thank you for the museum and for the resturant/food recommendations. We are looking forward to trying local cuisine. Thinking of signing up for a food tour.
Anyone do a food tour in Zagreb? Any recommendations?
