I know nothing about Croatia and just learned we are heading there ...

Please help! :)
We are going to Zagreb and Rab. We have three weeks. Where else should we go? What should we do in Zagreb and in Rab? Is Rab child-friendly (I read something about nudist beaches and want to make sure that it isn't something that would affect us being there with kids)?

Thank you.

OK, I'll bite. If you have no interest in Croatia how in the world did you wind up just going there?

I did not mean to communicate that I have no interest, only that it is an unexpected/unplanned trip that has become available and I am now needing to figure things out quickly.

If anyone on this forum can tell me a little about Zagreb and Rab and also about any good/easy side trips from these two points in Croatia, I would greatly appreciate it so that I can focus my research.

I also need to know if Rab is child-friendly.

Many thanks.

Only drove through/around Zagreb. Not sure where Rab is in Croatia? We took a two week beach bum vacation in Podgora as home base (just South of Split) and traveled around by car. Was not too impressed with much of the interior and towns like Gospic you can still see bullet holes and damage from the Croatian War. Anywhere along the coast will be nice. The water was beautiful crystal clear. Prices were comparable to central Europe. When I was there, at almost every beach some women went topless. A lot of folks visiting from old East Countries and going topless, old folks in Bikinis, Speedos with beer bellies hanging out and young children running around nude was not uncommon. Honestly for me it was somewhat relaxing as body conscience was not that important. Not trying to scare you away and your experience may be different. Nude beaches where marked with signs and on some maps. Many beaches are rocky and a water type shoe can save you some foot pain. There are many National and Nature Parks in Croatia worth a visit like the Plitvice Lakes. A ferry/boat trip out to an island like Korcula is almost a must too.

There's nothing wild goose about it. We are on a wonderful extended trip - some of it planned, some of it open to spontaneous opportunities, some of it in flux. Croatia was on again, off again, and once it became a definite, I asked for info hoping some posters here would share their knowledge.

Why not just help with the question if you feel like it and ignore it if you do not want to help? Why does it matter how or when I posted it? Why does there have to be something going on other than a fellow-traveler asking for recommendations?

We visited parts of Croatia 10 years ago and enjoyed it, although we didn't make it out to any of the islands off the coast. Diocletian's Palace in Split was a highlight, as was Plitvice Lakes National Park, with waterfalls and come-up-to-you fish that any kid of any age should love!

No wild geese on our trip, but the seafood (especially squid risotto) was outstanding.

We rented an apartment in Dubrovnik for a few days and loved strolling the streets in the balmy evenings. Wonderful walk on the walls with amazing vistas. Korcula was my favorite island and we loved Hvar as well. We only did the coast and then a ferry to Italy, but I know there are many other coastal and island destinations that visitors love.
