We will be spending several days in Split in early October. Interested in a day trip to either Hvar or Korcula. Appreciate your thoughts on pros and cons of each. Will Hvar be really busy in October? Which has more to do within walking distance of the ferry?
Is it worth it to take a car to either one?

I consider distance from the ferry the same for both islands. Both islands are nice, I preferred Korcula due to the small alleys. Hvar felt more wide open, see the end of the walk from the begging of the walk. You can't go wrong with either one. It's flip-a-coin time here. I think the key thing here will be the ferry timetable. Hvar will likely be the winner with more times per day from Split. J
The ferry from Split to Korčula stops at Hvar first so you would have more time there.
Do not bring a car to which ever island you decide to visit. The fast catamaran does not take cars and the car ferry takes longer.
