Tour guide is suggesting that we don't stay overnight in May because Hvar is not in full season and is "rough" at night. Are restaurants open in Mid May? The tour guide is suggesting that we do a day travel from Split. Any information or comments would be useful.

madonna, it is essential that you post additional information. Because this is your first post on this board, it is impossible to tell how much travel experience you have. And you were very, very vague about the source of this [ridiculous] negative comment about a major tourist destination. I cannot provide more information for you until you are more specific about your needs and the source of this alleged warning.

Yes, who is this tour guide? If they are a guide from Croatia, they should know that Hvar is fine.
We were there last year the third week of May and found NO wild crowds. It was quiet and beautiful and delightful. And yes, the restaurants were in full swing. We had an apartment for 2 nights overlooking the harbor....
Day trips are fine from Split, but I would only choose a day trip if you were just doing the islands for one night and did not wish to pack up and move.
