I’ll leave in a few days for the Balkans. The weather is going to be much cooler than I thought it was going to be. It looks like it won’t even get to 70° . Do you think that a rain shell will be fine or should I pack my fleece lined jacket? Should I only bring one pair of shorts? I am tempted to pack two sweaters. .
I take a warm layer (usually a light fleece jacket, but sometimes a cheap puffer jacket) and a separate waterproof rain jacket. That's more flexible than a lined rain jacket.
I never take shorts to Europe because I don't want to use that much sunscreen. At this time of year, even if you might have some days with shorts weather in the early afternoon, is it going to be warm enough to want to be in shorts at 9 AM and 7 PM? For me, the answer would be "no". It can also be quite breezy if you're along the coast.
I wouldn't take two sweaters unless I expected to need to layer them. To me, the second one would just be dead weight in my suitcase.
The rain of October has arrived a week early in Croatia.
We have been sailing down the Dalmatian coast for the past week. Arrive in Dubrovnik tomorrow. Expecting sunny weather- we had just a half a day of rain all week - in the lower 70s but very cool when the sun sets.
I like Weatherspark for averages. For instance, it shows the chance of rain is pretty low in June, July, and August and fairly moderate and without much radical change to the rest of the year. It also shows the min and max by percentage odds, which is a clue to the extremes above the average you might encounter.
In my admittedly limited experience, fall begins to arrive in that area in late September or early October. At least in some areas (including coastal Montenegro and Zagreb), fall means an increased likelihood of rain. I've experienced some real downpours (more than a few minutes, less than all day) in Herceg Novi and Zagreb.
One of the great things about the forum is that it encourages me to look and learn. Today Croatisn rain. Zagreb is wettest in the summer, while Split and Dubrovnik are wettest in the winter, and the differences between Zagreb and the coast are like night and day. I never would have guessed such extremes.
