Hotel suggestions or B&B in Split and Dubrovnik

Any suggestions for inexpensive B&B by the old town gate/wall?

There are lots of good recommendations for places to stay in Split. You have several good resources: A good guidebook, tourist information offices, travel forum, and the internet. Here is a link to another thread on our travel forum with similar questions: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/croatia/small-hotels-or-guest-rooms-in-split-and-dubrovnik

Here are two recommendations from Rick's guidebook that you might consider:
Hotel Peristil
Kaleta Apartments
Split Apartment Croatia

I hope this helps some.

We just got back from our trip to Croatia. I loved the Angelus Apartments in Dubrovnik. The room was clean, the host helpful and the location was perfect! Since the walled city is flat in the middle and rises on both sides, it was great to have a place close to the Pile Gate that was in the flat part of town. After walking all day, it was nice not to have to climb a lot of stairs to get to our room. There is a street of outdoor restaurants right by the apartment. Since there are several restaurants side-by-side, eat down by the church for wonderful pizza and calzone at great prices for embarrassing large portions! (We ate it all anyway!)

Just returned from our trip, including Split and Dubrovnik. Re Split we stayed inside the walls of Diocletian's Palace at Banica Apartments, Kresimirova 6, 21000, Split ,Phone +385 915034725,Mobile Phone +385 91 22 64 222 split-apartments-rooms.com. The hosts were extremely helpful getting us to our apartment. We were driving, parking is a problem, and they found free parking for us. We had a room with balcony, free beverages in the fridge, and a cute room, well maintained. A rooftop terrace and our balcony provided wonderful views and a place to relax. $219 for two nights, just off the main square in the palace. Our apartment and balcony were off the rear of the building, very quiet.

Re Dubrovnik-we stayed at Apartments Dubrovnik Center, Vicka Lovrina 2 20000 Dubrovnik, (this is the office not the address of our studio) Phone +385 98512706, we had the most wonderful host ever, he arranged free travel from Rental Drop return,(downtown office) was waiting for us at Pile Gate, helped us to our rooms, gave us a great perspective of Dubrovnik and the war, took it upon himself to take our ferry voucher (Dubrovnik to Bari, Italy) to the port to convert the voucher into tickets. We stayed in a studio with kitchenette and it was immaculate. It was 105 steps from the madness of the crowds on the main street, a peaceful respite. The steps were not all in a row but staggered in levels and were not so bad. I am 65 with knee replacements, bad lungs, and did fine. I would have real reservations on staying near or on the main street, steps were worth it. Internet was great. $194 for two nights. You might find as good a host, you will not find one better.

Communication was not a problem with either hosts as they were quite fluent.
