Guidance on tipping in croatia

I will be touring and traveling in Croatia in a couple of weeks and have all of your travel guides but there is no clear guidance on tipping. We will have private drivers and guides so was not sure what the expectations are locally.

Tipping is in the index, and page 764 of the Croatia guidebook.
In short, tipping is not anything like the US.

BTW, welcome to the forum!
This is not a direct line to Rick Steves, it's a forum for fellow travelers.

I'm not clear on what you want to know. We tipped our drivers and guides in May, because they were good and because we realize they have lost a lot of income over the last couple of years.

I don't really remember exactly what we tipped--that would sometimes depend on what we had for cash, but it was something like 250 kuna for both of us for a full-day guided tour. That works out to about 20 Euros each. For a drive of a couple of hours, I think we tipped 80-100 kuna or about 5-7 Euros each. In general, I think we tried to round it off to roughly 10% of the cost of the service.

Do what you want. Just know no one will be offended with nothing and in general they are use to the bill being rounded up, maybe a bit more if its a small round. And if the service provider made your day and you want to give 10 or 20% go for it. If the bill is 185 and you are paying with a credit card, before you present the card, you just say charge me 200.

James E is correct. A tip is not expected but appreciated. We hire the same driver/tour guide when in Dalmatia. When he took us to Medjugorje for an overnight trip, he went above and beyond when my cousin had a toothache. At the end of the trip he tipped the guide and he didn’t want to take it, they went back and forth. In the end he accepted the money with a big thank you. Just tip whatever you feel, or don’t tip, it’s all okay.

Thanks to all for the responses. Our trip was set up by a private local guide and her information highlighted that the cost of our drivers, guides, etc did not include gratuities. I didn’t want to offend anyone. So I’ll just do whatever and hope for the best!

I hate it when I'm effectively asked for a tip.
