I've seen a lot of tour companies that offer private day trip tours to Pltivice from Zagreb, but have not been able to find any company that offers group day tours. We are two adults + child and looking to join a group tour for the day to keep costs low. Is there any such thing?

I'm not familiar with any, but you might check the tourist office. You can take a public bus to/from the park, about 2 hours each way. See p. 101 of Rick Steves' Croatia & Slovenia or also these bus schedules.
