Global positioning system (no acronyms allowed)

  1. In trying to get from Dubrovnik to Mostar, GPS kept steering me up every insane mountain road. In each case I would hit a boarder Station and be turned back on a "locals only" rule. I advise crossing into Bosnia on the main highway and headding East from there.
  2. In Dubrovnik, the voice on my GPS got a good kilometer ahead of the map. In Split it was a half kilometer behind. What is that about? In Dubrovnik the voice says "you have reached your final destination" and shuts down. I'm still 5 turns away from the hotel.
  3. This website things acronyms like gps are yelling because they are all caps, and filters them out fyi.

Just curious. What was the make of the device used?

And thus the reason I have NEVER relied on GPS anywhere in the world.

Old fashioned paper map reviewed nightly to plan route. So much more practical than relying on a satellite.

Live and learn.

I'm curious as to whether this was your personal GPS with recently downloaded maps, or included with a rental car (and perhaps outdated). But we never totally rely on our GPS. We always have a paper map that we've reviewed shortly before heading out for the day, and keep with us.

I've never had a problem using acronyms on this site (LOL)

I have relied on GPS the last two times I have driven in Croatia and Slovenia (and Bosnia and Montenegro) - but I don't rely on it 100%. Instead, I look at the routes ahead of time the night before driving somewhere, to scope out logical routes. I also look at the road signs when I drive. If I see signs pointing in the direction of a town and my GPS wants to take the other turn, I'm more inclined to follow the sign. (Though Google Maps with data on the phone also has traffic info.) Very rarely do I rely on my GPS blindly - only in cases where I make a spontaneous decision to drive somewhere I hadn't considered.

Last month in Slovenia I used my Android phone with Google Maps. It seemed to do pretty well at picking routes. Two years ago in Croatia, I used my Garmin GPS, which had a lot of poor map information for Bosnia in particular (not surprising). That's a case where Google Maps would presumably be superior to a fixed (perhaps out of date) map like in a Garmin GPS unit like the one I used to have.
