Getting from Ljubljana to Split

I have been planning our trip in September and we want to go from Ljubljana to Split on Sept 12. I think the best way is to take a train from Ljubljana to Zagreb and then fly to Split. I would love your suggestions. Can we rent a car in Ljubljana and drop it off in Split?
I have been trying to find train shells from Ljubljana to Zagreb and Zagreb to Ljubljana but when I go to rail europe it says SORRY

You could take the train from Ljublana to Zagreb, and then you could rent a car in Zagreb and drive to Split. Very easy driving. I assume if you rented the car in Ljubljana and dropped it off in Split that you would pay a huge drop-off fee.

Have you checked how long the ferry takes to get from Split to Korcula and back to Split? Seems like you might be spending a lot of time on the ferry. Hvar is much closer to Split than Korcula. We loved Hvar Town but I know a lot of people love Korcula.

You really only need 1 night in Plitvice. Time your arrival so that you can visit the Upper Lakes in the late afternoon and then visit the Lower Lakes the next morning to avoid crowds. Or you can do vice versa. No need to spend 2 nights at Plitvice, and this gives you an extra night somewhere.

You absolutely do NOT need a car in Zagreb. It would be very stressful. Zagreb is very walkable.

We took the train from Zagreb to Ljubljana. We bought our tickets the day before. One-way tickets were $9.00 in 2019. The train ride is about 2 - 2.5 hours.

Inefficient itinerary - you're going through Zagreb too many times. You should just buy the train tickets on arrival - rail europe is an overpriced travel agent - use the Croaitan or Slovenian railways site - but its far too early to book in advance even if thats possible

Why not
Zagreb-Lubj rail
Pick up car - spend time in Slovenia
Flexibus or similar to Rijeka, Croatia - about 2.5 hours
Hire a car to see Istiria and either keep the car until split or tain/bus south
