From Split to Zagreb with 2 open nights

Hello -

I posed a similar question in the "General" forum before thinking to post here as well.

We're looking at 3 nights in Dubrovnik, 1 in Korcula, 1 in Hvar, and then 2 in Split. We will stay our final night in Zagreb as my wife flies home from there and I look to train from there to Budapest. We have 2 nights open that we were going to rent a car and drive to Rovinj for 2 nights then drive onto Zagreb for our final night. With so much to see in the area the more I look at it the less I like the idea of dealing with the logistics of renting a car, driving, parking, more driving, dropping off car, and shuttling around once we depart Zagreb.

Perhaps we would be best served just to bus it from Split to another spot(s) and then bus from there to Zagreb. Thoughts?

Would Zadar and Trogir be too close/similar to what we've already experienced? Maybe a stop in Trogir and spend both nights in Zadar? They look beautiful and I'm concerned that the pros/cons of additional logistics don't weigh in favor of going to Rovinj. Perhaps it will be best to go there if we head back in that direction on a different trip. Beyond those 2 options...any favorites that logistically and personally have won you over?

Edit: This is for the nights of 7/20 and 7/21

I think you're right to question the amount of car time required to spend too little time in Rovinj and too little time in Zagreb. I like Istria, but I wouldn't do it. I'd take the train or bus to Zagreb and spend the time there. It has a very attractive old town that looks different from the coastal hotspots, plus some interesting museums.

I took the bus on that route last summer and stopped overnight in Zadar, which would be a convenient option on a bus itinerary. It is very nice, but it has been so long since I've been to Dubrovnik and Split that I can't tell you whether it is different enough.

I haven't been to Trogir yet.

Are you planning on making all of the locations you mentioned by bus and ferry ?

If you had a car, I would vote for Plitvice instead of trying to make it all the way up to the Istrian Peninsula for this short amount of time. Plitvice was one of the highlights of our 6 weeks in Europe last year.

We will ferry through from Dubrovnik to Split.

With the limited time I think we will pass on Plitvice this time. I feel a little foolish saying this to someone form Colorado but we spent a week at RMNP last month so I think we're after something, even not entirely similar, different with these couple of days.

Istria is too far for such a short trip, beautiful though it is. Are you talking of travelling in 2 weeks or for next year? Have you managed to find accommodation on the islands for just one night - this would be unusual, as most have a minimum booking or 3/4 nights.

Most people spend a minimum of 10 nights covering Dubrovnik to Split, so if I were you, I would pick either Korcula or Hvar. The catamaran leaves Korcula and Hvar late afternoon, so you will need to think what to do with your luggage.

Trogir can be covered from Split.

From the schedules posted online we'd depart Korcula at 9:45am or 1:30pm. And depart Hvar to Split at 11:30am, 1pm, or 3:10pm.

We will only have backpacks and since my wife will only be in 1 type of climate this time around she should be able to pack light.

I did book a bus from Zadar to Zagreb on 7/22 so we'll have at least 1 night there (likely 2) unless we find something else.

Air BnB has loads of options available...I have about 8 saved for each location and we'll book once we get down there (booking Dubrovnik, however, before we leave).

And yes, this is for this year.
