We are planning to travel from AVL or CLT in October to Croatia. Willing to stop over in AMS or other for a few days on either end, but would like suggestions on most affordable airlines and routes for mid-October. Dates are flexible. Thinking of starting in Istria and working our way down to Dubrovnik, with a few days in Split. So we can fly in to one end and fly out of the other. I've read ZAG is the largest airport with most available flights, but not sure which airline/route we should be looking at to get the most bang for our buck! Planning to rent a car for everywhere except Dubrovnik and Split. Thanks!

Just start searching--I use Kayak and Google.
If you are booking separate (low-cost carriers for example) flights from AMS to Croatia, Skyscanner is good for that.
Zagreb is convenient for Istria and not a long drive, but the other airports are Pula and Rijeka (Rijeka is much more limited and seasonal, but you never know). You could also check flights to Ljubljana.

The Rijeka airport is actually on the island of Krk which is connected by a bridge to Rijeka. A believe they discontinued the ferry, but you can check that out on google. We have family in Rijeka and we always fly into Zagreb and either rent a car there or get picked up by family. In my then 12+ trips there we have never flown into Rijeka.
Flying out of Dubrovnik can sometimes mean two changes. We haven’t flown out of the other airports so I can’t help you there.
