What does it cost to take the car ferry from Split to Stari Grad on Hvar, round trip. We will be there in May. How ofter do the car ferries run and do you need an advance reservation? Also, how expensive is the fare for people on the car ferry or on the catamaran from Split to Hvar?

You can find schedules and prices for car ferries to Stari Grad on the Jadrolinija website. Both Jadrolinja and Krilo run catamarans to Hvar town, and again schedules and prices can be found on their websites. May is likely low season, when sailings are usually less frequent and prices lower. Be sure to verify the effective dates on the schedules you're viewing. I've only used the catamarans, so I can't comment on whether reservations for a car ferry are advisable in May.

There is no point buying car ferry tickets in advance even in high season, as they don't guarantee you a place on a particular boat - just turn up, put your car in the queue, buy your tickets at the booth (you pay for the car and each passenger) and wait! If you are a foot passenger, just turn up and get your tickets.
You need reservations for the catamarans online in advance.
Costs and times at krilo.hr and jadrolinija.hr. In May, there is a reduced service.
