We are spending a month in Italy in May, picking up a vehicle in Milan and returning to Milan.
We would like to tour down into Tuscany and Umbria. We would also like to visit Croatia and Slovenia before returning to Milan.
Any tips or comments on taking a ferry in Mid may [2018] from east Italy to perhaps Zadar or Split, Croatia?
Make sure you can take an Italian rental car into Slovenia and Croatia without a super high fee and also can take the car on a ferry.
If not: an alternate itinerary might be: Drop the rental car in Venice. Shuttle to Ljubljana. Rent a car locally for Slovenia if need be (recommended for at least day trips from Ljubljana). Train from Ljubljana to Zagreb or Rijeka. Rent another car and drop it in Dubrovnik. Fly from Dubrovnik to Venice. (Some days, and some days, budget carrier Volotea has direct flights too.) Yeah, that's a lot of rental cars. On the upside, you would skip the one-way drive back between Croatia and Milan.
Thanks Andrew, but I am renting a motorcycle in Milan.
After crossing over to Croatia, we will travel to Slovenia and to the Dolomite's before returning the bike to Milan. It's nice to be retired and able to spend 5 weeks at a time in Europe.
