We're looking into traveling by overnight ferry from Dubrovnik to Bari, Italy in early June (to avoid using a whole day traveling by air, via Rome). Would like to know other people's experience on it. Is it reliable (cancelled due to rough seas much?), is it comfortable? (we're planning to get a cabin). Any other helpful tips? Thanks.
Is it a Jadrolinija ship
Yes, on Jadrolinija.
We've taken this line from Rijeka to Dubrovnik many times in past years, you definitely want your own room. We were 4 family members and the room had 2 bunk beds. The room was very small but private. It is not luxury by any standards but you should have your own bathroom in the room. It will get you where you want to go.
Thank you Barbara. I realize your route was different, but did you ever experience cancellations for your route due to weather? I imagine that's a season potential problem, but am not sure.
These large ships don't get cancelled as much as smaller ferries (with smaller docks) may be. If the sea is rough, I think that sleeping through it on a good, flat bed is the best counter-measure.
I did the overnight Jadrolinija ferry in the opposite direction (Bari to Dubrovnik) during September and it was a smooth trip. As others have mentioned, the cabins are basic but comfortable. You may wish to consider a cabin with shower as it costs only slightly more. There's no separate shower stall (just a hand-held mounted on the wall), but I appreciated the morning shower since my lodgings weren't available until afternoon.
Thank you all for your help. Feeling a little more confident about this choice now.
Don’t worry, these are large ships, not small ferries. We went transatlantic on a smaller ship, same company (years ago).
My wife and I took that same Dubrovnik to Bari ferry in mid-May, 2014. We booked a cabin, with shower and toilet. The cabin was quite comfortable, and larger than I would have expected, although the (twin) beds were college dorm firm. I can’t speak to its overall reliability, but on the one occasion I used it it was smooth sailing, and arrived a little earlier than scheduled. If you decide to book it, pick up some supplies before you board, for a late evening picnic supper/snack on deck as you sail out of Dubrovnik- it’s a beautiful departure.
We took the ferry. It left Dubrovnik at 10 pm, arrived in Bari at 8 am. Sea was rough but as long as we were laying down in our cabin it was tolerable. Standing up, well, that was a different case.
Thanks for the help everyone. I did go ahead and book the trip, but was surprised to find that the better cabins were already sold out (booking 3 months ahead!). At least we got a cabin with a place to sleep.
Ilja, what time of year did you take the ferry? I'm wondering if summer generally has smoother seas?
It was October. Summer generally has more placid sea but , of course, could be exceptions.
