Am planning to travel through Balkan Peninsula in April and take ferry from Dubrovnik to Bari and train on to Rome. Do I need to make ferry reservations in advance, or can I take care of it when I arrive in Dubrovnik?
I did this at the end of May, full ferry service began on June 1, prior to that there were ferries a few times a week.
I would check the schedule well ahead of time if it's important to your planning, but you should have no problem buying the ticket when you get to Croatia.
We did that trip in October, also out of main season. Ferry went only twice or maybe 3 times a week. It leaves Dubrovnik at 10 pm and arrives in Bari at 8 am. I would recommend a cabin. More expensive but worth it. Sleeping like in a rocking hotel. You can buy the ticket for a cabin at any Jadrolinia office. I did it about a week ahead in Split. The day of departure tickets for cabins were already sold out. You could still get on ferry but having just a seat.
Thank you Zoe and llja! We are starting our trip in Rome, traveling to Florence, Venice and a few other Italian spots and then taking ferry from Venice to Croatia, where we will have 2-3 weeks in western Balkans. I knew that ferry does not travel every day during that period, but unable to identify when yet as schedules are not up yet. Am glad to hear I can wait until I get to Croatia before booking. Had not thought about booking as soon as I get to Croatia. Will do that. Plan to book a cabin. Much more comfortable. Thanks!
We did it in July and the ferry left at 11pm, arriving at 7am in Bari. Best thing we ever did was arrange a cabin ahead of time. On the ferry website, you can even pick the cabin you want - turned out great as we were with family and we stayed close to each other. It was quite a fun adventure for all of us!!
