Ferry between Anacona and Split in mid October

Can we take a ferry to Split in mid October from Anacona, Italy? Can we take ferries from Split to Dubrovnik or should we take a train/bus?

Jadrolinija ( http://www.jadrolinija.hr/en/home ) operate Mon, Wed and Friday in mid October.

The coastal ferry Rijeka-Split-Dubrovnik, only operates in the summer months. Train is not an option since the last train to Dubrovnik was in the late 1960's. Buses run frequently, and are of a good standard. Remember to sit on the right for good views of the coastline.

We've decided to fly from Rome FCO to Dubronik. Easyjet or Vueling? Is it easy to get to the old city from the airport . Is there an airport bus? we'll be staying at a B&B by the old wall.

Yes there is an airport bus run by the Atlas tour company. It costs 35 kuna, about 6 dollars. You can buy tickets in the arrival hall just after you pass through customs, and also on the bus if the office is closed.

Which airline? Easyjet obviously. ( You may have noticed I am a Brit, as is Easyjet !). Easyjet is a budget airline, that has never let me down, and when things outside its control have gone wrong, has done a good job in sorting things out.

But I have never flown with Vueling, and have no reason to think that they are not the equal of Easyjet.

Thank you, Richard! Great information. And, I will look into Easy Jet from Rome. Since we are flying Standby from Atlanta, I'm not certain which flight we'll arrive on. I have to get my Easyjet reservation once I arrive in Rome.

Thanks again!

Can we purchase Croation KN at ATMs at the Dubrovnik airport? We will have Euros and Dollars and ATM cards. Is it necessary to have them before we arrive? Thanks!!

Yes there are a number of ATM machines in the arrival hall after you pass through customs. There is also an exchange office but I don't know their hours and you will probably get better rates in Dubrovnik. Only a few places take Euros and credit/debit cards aren't accepted everywhere, so you are wise to pick up some Kuna early.

Just noticed your comment about not pre-booking the Dubrovnik flight. It may be different on the USA, but budget airlines in Europe are often not cheap when booked at the last moment. So before going with Easyjet check out Croatian, and any other full service airlines.

Are the ferries that run between Anacona and Split in October / N
ovember ever delayed or cancelled because of rough seas. Is the sea rough in October/November? Thank you.

We are in Ravenna until friday and will take a train to Ancona Friday am to take the 9 pm Jadrolinija ferry to split. We've already gotten tickets for a 2 bunk cabin online. We are each bringing an overnight bag. How difficult is it to get to the ferry. They have not sent information other than a confirmation. How early should we get there. Thank you. We thought we'd receive info from them

Hope your trip went well. My husband & I are planning to take the ferry from Anacona to split Sept2015. We will be driving a car onto the ferry as well as booking a 2 bunk room. I've been watching for someone to post any hints regarding the process, and what to be prepared for. Was your room worth booking? etc. Any advise we'd greatly appreciate. Thanks

Actually, this was a horrible experience and I will never make a reservation with Direct Ferries again. We made an online reservation on oct 19 for oct 24. We purchased train tickets from Ravenna, through Rimini to Ancona to catch the ferry. On oct. 24' we arrived at the train station to learn there was a one day strike. This was Friday and the next ferry crossing was on Monday. I called the direct Ferry phone number that was on my online ticket to change our ticket to Monday six times. Each time the call center answered, I was put on hold and disconnected before I could explain what I needed. These were cell phone calls from Italy to the call center in the UK. We were unable to catch the ferry on oct 24 because of the train strike, we were unable to change our ticket and we lost $419. - a very bad experience. Plus, worst of all, we didn't get to Croatia! When we finally arrived at the port, we discovered there is a travel agency at the port who can sell tickets. We would not suggest that you purchase from directFerries online. Having already spent $419. We decided not to purchase another round of tickets.

Your attempts to call the ticket agency before the ferry departure were the best strategy, and so certainly frustrating when that didn't work. Hotel staff will often help with phone calls in cases like this, either to the booking agent or the ferry company. Although rules vary, most transportation tickets aren't usable or exchangeable after the scheduled departure, so I can well imagine that the port offices offered no option other than a new purchase. Booking directly with the ferry company may be a better plan for the next traveler, to avoid a middle-man.

I Agee and will get our tickets at the port if we are fortunate enough to get back there again. Our wonderful hotel in Ravenna also called and also had their calls disconnected. It was a very expensive lesson for two retired folks!

Sorry to hear your experience, so frustrating. Thanks for the heads up about the booking, I was thinking of requesting this reservation through a travel agent. Now I will try to contact the ferry line directly. Hope you will see Croatia soon

Thank you! We hope so, we were excited about taking the ferry and spending a week in Croatia. But, we are 73 Yrs old and 81 years old and this trip had been our dream trip for a long time. I don't think we will have this opportunity again. But we enjoyed our time in Italy. Good luck in your travels and safe travels.

FWIW, we've used Vueling and had no issues. (In fact, they were very decent several years back when we had a problem -- not with them but with our own planning.) And we've used EasyJet -- no problems there as well.
