Let's kick-start this new conversation space! What's your favorite destination in Croatia and why?
We were in Croatia in October and have two favorite towns and a suggestion!
Hvar - we spent three nights there and loved the laid-back feel of the place! We had a lovely apartment (Apartments Rosso) up the hillside, discovered some great restaurants, and enjoyed walks around the island.
Lovran - which is not necessarily on the tourist track but a good stopping point if you're traveling between Plitvice Lakes and Rovinj. We liked the small village-feel of Lovran and the really excellent seafood places right on the water. We found a wonderful, inexpensive hotel - Hotel Villa Vera. There is a nice seaside walkway between Lovran and the next larger town Opatija.
If you're in Istria in the fall try to find a truffle festival! We found one in Lovran and it was so much fun--they even have a large statue of a truffle on the main street!
Croatia is so wonderful, it's hard to choose one favorite spot. Plitvice Lakes is one of the most stunningly scenic places on the planet. Dubrovnik is beautiful and historic. Trogir is a charming medieval town. We also discovered Lovran and Villa Vera; but to our great disappointment, it poured down rain while we were there, so we couldn't do much exploring. All in all, Croatia far exceeded my (already high) expectations and is on the "to return to" list.
It is so hard to pick a favourite destination because to me all of Croatia is beautiful. If I had too, I would pick Zadar, as it has so much to offer. Museums, churches, Roman ruins, Islands, a number of national parks very close by, a gorgeous old town and the list goes on. As well as that it is less crowded than Split or Dubrovnik.
