Family trip in June to northern Croatia. Looking for ideas.

Greetings,
I will be visiting Croatia for the first time in June and am looking for ideas of things to do. We are a family with children ages 12 & 14. We will be spending our first day at Plitvice and then driving to the coast and staying on Krk. We will have 5 days and I am looking for your best ideas in the area. Also, if anyone has any tips and info about driving/ferries, it would be appreciated. We do plan to go over to Istria for at least one of the days, not sure where. Pula? After our days in Croatia, we will be heading north to Slovenia, so if you have any stops along the way that are must see, let me know. FYI: we love the walking/hiking and are looking forward to experiencing the sea!
Thanks for your help.

Is there a reason why you picked Krk? I imagine so. To be honest, there isn't much to do on Krk except relax.

Pula is my least favorite town in Istria, but the arena would probably be fun for your family. If you go to Pula, then combine it with a visit to the Kamenjak peninsula to stop by the Safari Bar. There are so many things to do in Istria that would be fun for your family, but it is a 2.5 hour drive each way from Krk, so probably you'll only want to go to Istria one time. Perhaps look at changing your location?

I can also recommend the island of Cres - again not much to do, but it is cute.

Thank you, Emily, for your thoughts. We picked Krk because it was recommended by a friend. And we do want to have plenty of relaxing and beach time. Thanks for your recommendation of Cres. We thought about spending a day there exploring.

The arena is the main reason to visit Pula for us. We have never seen something like that and thought it would be a nice chance. If you would skip that to go somewhere else on Istria, do you have a favorite? Also, the Safari Bar looks fun. Thanks for the suggestion. I was just looking earlier today at a hike around Cape Kamenjak, so if we end up doing that, we will have to stop by the Safari Bar. The hike is 12.5 kilometers around the peninsula. Did you do any hiking there?

We just got back from a 2 week trip. We spent 2 nights in Istria. We went to Rovinj for a half day which was really cool to walk around. You have to get away from the touristy spots but it was worth it. We hit a few hill towns and had lunch (recommended in Rick’s book) at Konoba Dolina. This was a great lunch probably the best one we had. In Slovenia we visited the Škocjan Caves which were spectacular with a really good hike afterwards. I think the teenagers will really like this. Definitely go to Ljubljana and just walk (hike to the castle) around and eat!
