Eight nights between Croatia and Slovenia

Just getting into my planning for May and will have 8 nights to split between Croatia and Slovenia. Plans are to fly out of Dubrovnik (to London) and we will be in Venice beforehand.

Right now we are just looking at trains, but might be open to a car for a few days. I did get a Rick Steves guidebook for xmas and am going to dive into it, but would love a few ideas. Nature/easy hiking/cycling and historical sites are mostly our thing.

Thanks all!

If you take ferry from Venice, you still have an extremely long stretch of coastline to Dubrovnik. You could do that and rent a car in Istria, but you will have to be very judicious in choosing where to stop en route to Dubrovnik (drop car when you get there or perhaps in Split and take a catamaran).
You could also consider flying. You'll have to do some research and decide on areas you most want to visit before deciding on transport (but transport options will affect your choices).
Decide on how many days you need in Dubrovnik and work backward.
