Dubrovnik vs Split

We will be stopping in both cities, Dubrovnik and Split, in May 2025 on a cruise. Which is easier to do a walking tour on our own, and which would be better if we hired guide?

Both cities are easy to do a walking tour on your own. However, I think it's really helpful to have a guide for Split so you can learn about the Old Town, Diocletian, and his palace. We hired Maya Benzon, a local guide, who is recommended by Rick. We hired her for a private 2-hour tour of Diocletian's Palace and Old Town.

In Dubrovnik I recommend visiting War Photo Limited for the history of the Bosnian War in the 90's.

Also want to add that in Dubrovnik you will probably want to walk the walls, and you don't need a guide for that. Very easy to do on your own.

Having a guide in Split will enhance your visit, especially to Diocletian's Palace. Dubrovnik's big draws, the wall and Mt. Srd, don't benefit from it as much. Disembark early and head straight to the walls. The crowds are big. See if you can buy a ticket ahead of time to save time and aggravation for both the walls and the cable car to Mt Srd. Not sure you can but if it would be worth it.
