I'm contemplating between taking the ferry or renting a car to get from Dubrovnik to Split. We will have two kids with us (6 and 8) and probably 2 suitcases as well.
Would you recommend driving or taking the ferry?
If we take the ferry, can we get off at the islands? If yes, for how long? If no, what do you do on the ferry?
If we drive, do you recommend making stops at any cute places along the way?

There is only one catamaran a day linking Dubrovnik and Split - see krilo.hr. Tickets need to be booked in advance online. Seating is more like an aircraft and there is plenty space for luggage.
Therefore, unless you want to spend more time on the islands (most accommodation has a 3/4 night minimum booking period), you will have to go straight to Split.
If you drive, you will need to check that your car insurance covers you for taking the car outside the EU and there will be a one way drop fee. You could stop at Omis, which is about half way and is popular with families.
You could also take the bus.

The bus is a very good option. Cheap and faster than the ferry. If you did take the ferry, a stop likely would mean an overnight or two, not a bad option (Korcula or Hvar), but a different trip.
If we take the ferry from Dubrovnik to split and decide to spend a night or two in korcula, is there a particular area we should stay? Area near the ferry or somewhere else?
You would need to look at the ports on Korcula. I believe the smaller ferries stop in Korcula town, which would be a preferred stop, other ferries stop in Vela Luka, way on the west end of the island.
Another option is taking the bus from Dubrovnik to Korcula, then catch a ferry to Split.
I have posted a similar question, but no response... maybe some-one here can help... We need to get from Dubrovnik to Hvar (and will be staying in Stari Grad - but it seems that the Krilo Catamaran Ferry only arrives in Hvar Town at 19.30 - are there busses one can get soon after to Stari Grad - or is it better/ possible to take a Cab?
Or we could take the bus from Dubrovnik to Split and get the Ferry to Stari Grad from there?
